It is ethanol (ethyl alcohol) that has been rendered unfit for human consumption by adding various denaturants, making it toxic or unpalatable. The addition of these denaturants makes methylated spirits unsafe for drinking, but it retains its usefulness as a solvent and cleaning agent for various applications.
