A junction diode is a semiconductor device made from a p-type and an n-type semiconductor material that is fused together to form a p-n junction. The p-type material has a deficiency of electrons or holes, while the n-type material has an excess of electrons. The p-n junction forms a barrier to the flow of electric current that depends on the direction of the applied voltage. When the diode is forward-biased, meaning the positive voltage is applied to the p-side and the negative voltage to the n-side, the barrier becomes smaller and current can flow through the diode. However, when the diode is reverse-biased, meaning the positive voltage is applied to the n-side and the negative voltage to the p-side, the barrier becomes larger, and very little current flows through the diode. Junction diodes are commonly used in electronic circuits for various purposes, such as rectification, signal detection, voltage regulation, and oscillation. They have many advantages, such as small size, fast switching speed, low cost, and reliability. However, they also have limitations, such as high power dissipation, limited voltage range, and temperature dependence. Junction diodes are widely used in various electronic devices, including computers, televisions, radios, and mobile phones.
