Watch glass is a glass sheet with a concave-convex circular shape. The glass is characterized by its resistance to chemical liquids.
Soda glass has good chemical and physical properties. It is suitable for any process that requires resistance to chemical stresses for a short period of time and must not withstand high and sudden thermal loads.
It has a variety of uses in the laboratory:
Watch glass allows containers to be covered in the laboratory, although it is not an airtight or hermetic seal, and as a measure of protection from contaminants in the environment.
In the area of teaching, it is used as a surface in evaporation processes because it allows closer observation of precipitates or crystallization.
It is a support for placing small quantities of a substance (solid products or wet samples) for mixing or for weighing on a balance or under the eyepiece of a stereo-microscope.
In a weighing process, the watch glass must first be weighed to remove the tare weight, i.e. it is placed on the balance and the balance is zeroed so that only the weight of the sample substance is obtained.
General properties of glass
Glass is distinguished by its very good chemical resistance to water, salt solutions, acids, bases and organic solvents. It is only attacked by hydrofluoric acid and, at high temperatures, by strong bases and phosphoric acid.
