Aspartame (Table sugar) is an intense nutritive sweetener discovered accidentally in 1965 by the chemist James schlatter from D.G. Searle and co. It is also known as Nutrasweet or Equal, whitch is an artificial noncarbonhydrate, zero-calorie sweetener (methyl ester of dipeptide I-aspartic acid, etc). It is a white, odourless powder approximately 200times sweeter than sugar.

It is used in packaged products (foods and drinks) – especially those labeled as “diet”, sugar-free, including diet soda. It has been used for decades to lower one’s intake of added sugar.
