The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has clarified why the payment of the ₦77,000 allowance to corps members has not yet started, despite the Federal Government’s approval.
Following the passing of the new minimum wage bill, the government approved an increase in corps members’ monthly allowance from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, effective July 2024.
The National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission communicated this approval in a letter dated September 25, 2024, signed by its Chairman, Ekpo Nta. However, corps members did not receive the increased allowance in September.
Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, the Director General of the NYSC, explained the delay, stating that the government has not yet released the necessary funds for the new allowance.
Speaking to BBC Hausa Service on October 5, 2024, Ahmed noted that even NYSC staff, whose salaries increased four to five months ago, still await the implementation of the new pay scale.
Ahmed expressed optimism that the new allowances will pay soon, although he did not provide a specific payment date.
He reassured corps members that the increase took effect on July 29, 2024, following President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the new Minimum Wage Bill, which set ₦70,000 as the minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
