Students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Idi-Araba campus have taken to protests over a significant hike in hostel fees, which raised costs from ₦65,000 to ₦80,000 for two semesters and ₦100,000 for a full academic year.
The increase, which contradicts a prior agreement, has sparked outrage, particularly among students from the College of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy, who are feeling the brunt of the fee adjustment.
Chanting slogans such as, “Change the memo, we no dey go,” protesters expressed their frustration and demanded a reversal of the decision.
In response, UNILAG authorities issued an eviction order, instructing students to vacate the hostels. This move has intensified the already volatile situation on campus.
Despite the eviction order, students have remained defiant, refusing to leave until their demands are met. The protests have led to a tense atmosphere, with police deployed to manage the escalating situation.
The letter, signed by Olusegun Akinnagbe, Principal Assistant Secretary of the Student Affairs Unit, instructed non-medical and undergraduate students to vacate the hostels unless they apply for an extension due to project defenses, internships, or other valid reasons.
Those granted permission to stay will face prorated charges for their accommodation.
The standoff between students and university management remains unresolved as protesters continue to push for a reduction in fees and a fair resolution to their grievances.
