Oluwatimilehin Doko, a 500-level Pharmacy student at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has made history as the youngest champion of the 15th African Scrabble Championship, held on October 26, 2024, in Kigali, Rwanda. His impressive performance, with 24 wins out of 32 rounds, reinforces Nigeria’s dominance in African Scrabble.
The four-day competition saw players from ten countries, including Kenya, Uganda, and Ghana. Doko’s standout moments included an early 487-423 win over Uganda’s Godwin Murungi and a decisive Round 31 victory against fellow Nigerian Mumeen Jimoh, finishing with a score of 574-442 to secure his lead.
In the Under-25 category, fellow UNILAG student and African Youth Champion David Ojih placed sixth, reflecting UNILAG’s legacy of nurturing top Scrabble talent. This achievement follows the success of UNILAG alumnus Enoch Nwali, who won the 2021 championship in Lusaka, Zambia.
