A prospective nationwide strike has been warned menacingly by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The union denounced the failure of the federal government to establish Governing Councils for federal universities, articulating profound concern.
ASUU has expressed its disapproval of what it considers to be the apathetic stance adopted by the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu with regard to academic affairs in Nigerian Federal Universities. Throughout an ongoing press briefing at the University of Abuja, this sentiment was expressed.
ASUU voiced its dissent during the briefing regarding the recent salary increases of 25% for academic staff and 35% for professors, which it regarded as a precarious wage award susceptible to revocation by the government.
The President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, underscored the extended duration that the administration lead by Tinubu has had to confront these issues.
Moreover, Osodeke emphasized the concern of ASUU regarding the lack of appointment of Governing Council members by the Federal Government at Federal universities. ASUU argued that the dissolution of these councils violated established university principles and was therefore illegal.
The National Universities Commission reportedly proclaimed on June 22, 2023, the dissolution of governing councils across federal universities and other agencies and parastatals in the country, as reported by The Punch.
Three days prior to this directive, President Bola Tinubu issued a comparable order which required the dissolution of boards in all government parastatals, agencies, and corporations.
