Lucy Opit Moved From Being a Student to an Institution Owner All in One Year.

“In a surprising turn of events, Lucy Opit’s life journey led her from being a student at Midwest Barber College in the US to becoming the owner of the same institution, all within a single year. Back in 2014, Lucy Opit enrolled at Midwest Barber College with the simple goal of mastering the art of barbering. Little did she know that she would eventually become the proprietor of the very institution where she received her training.

Fate intervened when she found herself in search of a suitable location and barbering equipment. It was during this quest that she received unexpected news – the school she had attended was on the brink of closure. Determined to acquire the necessary equipment, Lucy initially contacted the college’s owner to make a purchase. However, a persuasive conversation changed the course of her plans. Instead of embarking on the challenging path of starting a new institution from scratch, she decided to take ownership of the existing one.

Lucy shared her motivation, revealing, ‘I had just gone through a divorce, so I used my settlement along with some savings as the initial capital.’ By 2015, Lucy had successfully obtained her barbering license from the Kansas State Barbering Authority. This milestone granted her the privilege of not only being a skilled barber but also the proud owner of the sole ethnic barber shop in Manhattan, Kansas. Her achievements didn’t stop there; in 2018, she gained recognition as the first black woman in Kansas to own a nationally accredited barber college.”
