Chalcopyrite is a copper-iron sulfide, with similarities to pyrite. When exposed to acidic conditions, the metals in the chalcopyrite undergo oxidation, turning brilliant shades of blue, green, and purple. This iridescent luster has led to the term ‘peacock ore’ to describe these samples.
