‘g’ by Free Fall Bundle
The ‘g’ by Free Fall Bundle includes:
1 x Philip Harris g by Free Fall Apparatus
1 x Unilab Fast timer
4 x 4mm stackable plug leads – 750mm length
2 x Ball bearings
To determine the value of ‘g’ by timing the fall of a steel ball.
The ‘g’ by freefall release unit consists of a plate (90mm x 45mm x 3mm) carrying a pair of metal clips connected to 4mm sockets. The clips are opened, thus dropping the ball and breaking the contact between the clips.
The trip unit is mounted on a base measuring 100mm x 100mm x 12mm and comprises of a trip plate, the end of which bears upon the blade of a micro switch and holds it in the closed position. When deflected downwards by the impact of the ball the trip plate releases the blade and opens the switch. The trip plate comes complete with a protective rubber strip to prevent the switch from damage should it be accidentally struck directly by the ball
Kit comes complete with steel balls of 16mm and 19mm diameter, and also the Fast Timer by Unilab.Reasons to Love
Ideal for both Teacher Demonstration and student use
Learning Outcomes
Key Stage 4 Physics – Forces: Forces and fields: electrostatic, magnetic, gravity. Explain that weight is an effect of gravity which can vary with the gravitational field strength g (measured in N/kg) and recognise and predict phenomena that depend on weight and non inertial mass and distinguish between the two. Give examples of forces which act without contact across an empty space, linking these to the gravity, electric and magnetic fields involved. Estimating speeds and accelerations in everyday contexts.
