Gravimeter by Unilab

The Inductive Gravimeter is an exciting extension to the traditional methods of determining ‘g’ by freefall. When a magnet is dropped through the vertically mounted pipe it induces small alternating voltages into coils of wire which are accurately placed at 5cm intervals. These small signals are captured using a Digital Storage Oscilloscope. Knowing the geometrical dimensions of the gravimeter and calculating the time intervals between peaks of the captured signal, it is possible to calculate the acceleration due to gravity.
Specialist lead, Oscilloscope and Retort Stand are not included.
The Inductive Gravimeter has been developed from an original idea from John Nunn of the National Physics Laboratory.

Learning Outcomes
Key Stage 4 Physics – Motion and Forces: Forces and fields: electrostatic, magnetic, gravity. Explain that weight is an effect of gravity which can vary with the gravitational field strength g (measured in N/kg) and recognise and predict phenomena that depend on weight and non inertial mass and distinguish between the two.
