Amazng 17-Year-Old Girl Gets Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees Before High School, Wins Full PhD Scholarship
Stephanie Mui, 17, is a smart American girl who earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree before graduating high school. PhD student Mui received a full scholarship.
The youngest of 8,700 George Mason University, Virginia, grads, Mui is a math genius. Notably, she acquired this postgraduate degree a month before graduating high school.
After fifth school, she attended Northern Virginia Community College and earned her associate’s degree aged 13. Although she attended Oakton High in Fairfax County, Mui earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics at 16 at George Mason University after community college.
She said, “To me, it’s just my life,” reflecting on her unique path. Others may find it odd. I suppose it’s my life. Avoid calling it odd. Because people often assume ‘weird’ implies ‘strange but like, in a terrible way.’”
Mui concerned that George Mason University students would treat her differently due of her age, but she had no problems and no regrets. Despite the obstacles, she’s delighted she studied.
Mui credits her arithmetic prowess to her engineer parents. My father and I debated mathematical proofs in first grade.
She passed the College Board’s calculus CLEP in fourth grade, covering one-semester college skills.
Mui will begin her PhD in mathematics at New York University on a full fellowship, unlike many of her colleagues. She loves math because, “I kind of look at math like a puzzle. A nice puzzle to solve. That’s all for me. People should perceive it that way, too.”
