University of Ibadan Celebrates 2024 Convocation with 6,664 Graduates, Including 418 First Class Honorees
The University of Ibadan held its 2024 convocation ceremony with great pride, graduating 6,664 students, including an impressive 418 First Class honorees across its 15 faculties, distance learning centers, and affiliated institutes.
Vice-Chancellor’s Address:
During the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Professor Kayode Adebowale praised the graduates for their resilience, creativity, and perseverance. He emphasized that their education marks the beginning, not the end, of their journey.
He emphasized that the education they received was just the beginning of their journey, not the end. Prof. Adebowale urged them to use the skills and values gained at the university to innovate, lead, and positively impact society as they navigate future challenges.
He reminded graduates that life’s complexities often hide valuable opportunities. “With the strong foundation the University of Ibadan has provided, I have no doubt that you are ready to face the future with competence and courage,” he said.
Keynote Lecture:
The convocation lecture, delivered by Mr. Kehinde Ogunwumiju (SAN), an esteemed alumnus, focused on the theme of gratitude. He shared insights on how the practice of gratitude had enriched his personal and professional journey, helping him build meaningful relationships and achieve his goals. “The world awaits your contributions, and the practice of gratitude will light your path, offering clarity and purpose,” Ogunwumiju advised the graduates.
Challenges and Future Outlook:
Prof. Adebowale also highlighted challenges the university faces, such as funding shortages and inconsistent educational policies that hinder its mission to provide quality education.
He highlighted the broader issue of limited access to higher education, with over 95% of federal and state institutions providing university placements.
He called for greater financial autonomy for public universities and more consistent educational policies to enhance the quality and sustainability of higher education in Nigeria.
Valedictorian’s Speech:
The Valedictorian, Usman Oyekan, expressed deep gratitude to the university, parents, and guardians for their unwavering support.
He acknowledged the challenges students faced, especially during COVID-19 disruptions and union strikes, but praised their collective resilience in reaching this milestone.
As the 2024 graduates step into the next chapter of their lives, they carry with them the University of Ibadan’s legacy of excellence, ready to contribute meaningfully to society and navigate the challenges ahead with confidence.
