ASUUStrike: National Honor on Education Minister Adamu Adamu is being protested by NANS
announces “funeral plans” for postsecondary education under the Buhari
It is our responsibility to draw attention to the blatant insult that the careless and negligent government of Major General Buhari (rtd.) inflicted upon the majority of Nigerian students.
Without taking into account the reality that students at Nigerian universities have been home for nearly eight months due to this administration’s inability to pay for education and meet lecturer demands, Mallam Adamu Adamu, the incompetent Minister of (mis)Education, should not be awarded the National Honor of Commander of the Order of Niger (CON).
Not only has the acknowledgement of the Minister’s favoritism demystified the sanctity of National Honours, but it has also demonstrated to the vast majority of Nigerian students that this administration does not view youngsters as essential players in the process of national development. It is an outright insult on the majority of students to claim that a guy whose supervision university students have remained at home for nearly eight months due to a strike by professors was recognized by the President and awarded a National Honor.

We also observed in a state of acute astonishment the blatant, immoral, and humiliating way that Minister Ngige struck ASUU President Professor Oshodeke in the back at the ASUU/Ministry of Labour meeting with the leadership of the House of Representatives. How could a full minister—who should be an inspiration to young people—become so violently aggressive? We urge on President Maj. Gen. Buhari (rtd.) to take over the negotiations immediately and demand that Ngige immediately apologize to the Nigerian people for his illegal and fascist act.
Instead of focusing on the responsibility of leading the country, the President is giving out National Honors to a variety of individuals, most of them misfits. How can you honor those who have contributed to extremely low living standards and a high cost of living?
The National Honors and the honorees are completely denounced and rejected by NANS. We urge the student body in Nigeria to be prepared for a large-scale, nationwide ASUU strike. It is no secret that the administration opposes public education and the aspirations of millions of students and young people.
The Ministry of Education also released a confusing circular encouraging college and university students studying education to apply for a bursary scheme. It is deplorable in addition to being absurd. There would be no use in encouraging kids to apply if the government were truly as serious as they would like the public to believe. With their access to student data, the NUC and NCCE ought to be able to provide bursaries to every student. Our association is in favor of complete bursaries for all Nigerian students, not just a select few.
We insist that we prefer free education to bursaries and stipends for all stages of schooling. South West Nigerian students need to prepare for a sustained campaign of activism to compel the government to take appropriate action.
We plan to undertake a final funeral rite for public education in the nation in the coming days by taking over streets throughout the South West area, as this is what the Buhari government stands for.
