Nigerian Woman Becomes First Black Woman to Lead Oxford Union

Anita Okunde, a 20-year-old Nigerian student at the University of Oxford, has made history as the first Black woman elected President of the Oxford Union, a globally renowned debating society.

Currently pursuing a degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE), Anita is celebrated as an award-winning activist and advocate for climate justice and feminism. Expressing her gratitude on social media, she credited her faith for her achievement, quoting John 15:7: “All the glory be to God honestly.” On X (formerly Twitter), she shared her joy, stating: “First EVER Black woman elected as Oxford Union President & a proud state school President, built not bought, a dying breed! It has been an honour, and I cannot wait to serve as your president.”

A Vision for Change

Anita’s leadership agenda prioritizes inclusivity, accessibility, and better representation for marginalized groups within the Oxford Union. In an interview with Cherwell, she outlined her plans to address leadership underrepresentation, enhance support for individuals with disabilities, and improve the Union’s financial structure to make it more welcoming for students from diverse backgrounds.

Her extensive leadership experience at the Union includes serving as Treasurer, Director of Media, Socioeconomic Officer, and Secretary’s Committee member. During the recent Trinity Term 2024 election, she emerged victorious with 564 first-preference votes, defeating her closest rival, Siddhant Nagrath, by 44 votes.

Achievements Beyond Oxford

Recognized as one of Forbes’ Top 100 Environmentalists, Anita has a distinguished record of championing sustainability and youth empowerment. She also served as a Youth Commissioner for the UK Parliament’s Well-being of Future Generations Bill.

Inspired by her father, who honed his English skills through Oxford Union debates, Anita shared her pride in leading an institution so meaningful to her family. Her historic win marks a significant step forward in her mission to amplify underrepresented voices and foster impactful change both within and beyond the Union.
