South African researcher Mercy Fakude made important contributions to maize breeding after receiving a Fulbright Scholarship to Iowa State University to obtain a PhD in Plant Breeding.

With full funding from the esteemed Fulbright Scholarship Program, Mercy Fakude, a gifted student from South Africa, has accomplished an incredible feat by receiving a PhD in Plant Breeding from Iowa State University.
Through the Fulbright Scholarship, she was able to finish her dissertation study on creating a colchicine-free doubled haploid breeding process in maize known as Spontaneous Haploid Genome Doubling (SHGD), which covered her tuition, living expenses, living expenses, visa, and travel costs. This ground-breaking invention makes a substantial contribution to agricultural research by attempting to increase the sustainability and efficiency of maize breeding.
Mercy, who celebrated her accomplishment on LinkedIn, called the experience “life-changing” and thanked her advisor, committee members, family, and friends for their unwavering support.
Her academic background includes a Master of Science in Agronomy and Crop Science from North-West University in South Africa, as well as a University of Galway, Ireland, specialisation in Climate Change, Agriculture, and Food Security. Additionally, she graduated from North-West University with a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy and Crop Science.
Beyond the classroom, Mercy has embraced leadership and volunteer work with the goal of advancing sustainable agriculture and making a significant contribution to plant breeding. She said, “Here’s to growth, innovation, and new opportunities,” expressing optimism for the future. Her inspirational story highlights the transformational power of education and perseverance, serving as a beacon of hope for young Africans.
