Because the authorised minimum wage has not yet been implemented, workers in Oyo State’s polytechnics and institutions of education have declared their intention to go on an indefinite strike beginning February 6, 2025.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) Chairman, Dr. Kola Lawal, announced this in a statement issued in Ibadan on Sunday. Despite the Oyo State government’s efforts to guarantee equitable compensation, he denounced the ongoing delay as a disregard for the wellbeing of the workers.
Lawal pointed out that although the state government had given universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education more money to help them implement the new pay, these institutions’ administrations had not responded appropriately.

He noted that although polytechnic and college employees were excluded, universities like LAUTECH and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education have already adopted the higher wage beginning January 2025. According to the statement, “this failure has worsened workers’ financial struggles, especially amid rising inflation and economic challenges.”
“Our workers deserve the new wage just as much as other institutions, and it is unacceptable that they are left behind.” JAC is insisting that salaries from February onwards must reflect the new structure and is calling for the minimum wage to be implemented immediately beginning in January 2025.
The organisation has given Oyo State’s polytechnics and colleges of education until February 5, 2025, to comply with the requirement; if they don’t, services will be completely and permanently discontinued. In order to protect workers’ rights and avoid interfering with academic activity, the workers urged the appropriate authorities and stakeholders to act immediately.
