The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has removed all corps members assigned to Government Day Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, Kwara State. The decision follows allegations of assault on a female corps member by some female teachers in the school.
The incident occurred last Thursday when a female corps member visited the school to collect her clearance letter. Teachers allegedly attacked her for not greeting them properly, according to a PUNCH correspondent.
Witnesses alleged that the teachers slapped her, tore her NYSC uniform, and subjected her to further humiliation.
In response, the NYSC State Directorate withdrew about 10 corps members serving in the junior and senior sections of the school. This action, taken on Monday, aimed to ensure the safety of the corps members. The NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Y. D. Ahmed, visited the school before issuing the withdrawal directive.
The NYSC State Public Relations Officer, Oladipo Morakinyo, confirmed the move. “Yes, it is true that all the NYSC members serving in the school have been withdrawn temporarily, pending the outcome of the investigation into the alleged assault on one of the corps members,” he stated. He emphasized that the withdrawal also applied to the senior school to prevent potential risks to other corps members.
The state government has launched an investigation into the matter. Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, condemned the alleged assault and assured the public of a thorough probe.
The NYSC’s action underscores its commitment to the welfare and safety of its members, while the public awaits the findings of the government’s investigative panel.
