ASUU Announces Indefinite Strike at Gombe State University.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced an indefinite strike at Gombe State University (GSU) owing to unresolved welfare concerns.
Dr. Suleiman Salihu Jauro, the ASUU branch chairman, said that the strike was imperative due to insufficient teaching and learning environment at the institution.Notwithstanding prior efforts to resolve these concerns, including the failure to execute the 2021 Memorandum of Action (MoA) with the state government, no advancements have occurred.
Principal complaints include insufficient financing for the institution, the non-disbursement of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) for more than five years, and the neglect to enforce a minimum salary of N30,000 established by law in 2020.
In addition, unresolved promotion arrears and salary awards remain unaddressed. This marks the first internal strike at GSU since its founding two decades ago.
Despite the state government’s recent approval of N265 million for promotion arrears, Dr. Jauro said they have not received the money yet, as they only learned about the approval through media reports.
