At the African Spelling Bee, a Zimbabwean Student wins bronze.

At the 7th African Spelling Bee competition, which took place in Abuja, Nigeria, Shamiso Mutsahuni, a student at Irene Christian College, proudly represented Zimbabwe on the continental stage by placing third in the senior category.

Top spelling bees from eight African nations—Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Zambia, Benin, Ivory Coast, Rwanda, Uganda, and Ghana—participated in the competition, which took place from April 9 to April 13. Among some of the sharpest young minds on the continent, Mutsahuni stood out for his exceptional poise, concentration, and mastery of words.

She only lost to two Nigerian competitors who took home gold and silver for her outstanding effort, which earned her a bronze medal and a trophy.

“Shamiso’s outstanding performance put Zimbabwe on the winners’ podium while competing against the finest in Africa in the senior division. Throughout the difficult rounds, her tenacity and intelligence were clear,” Zimbabwe Spelling Bee founder James Bayanai said in a statement.

In addition to congratulating all competitors, the Zimbabwean Spelling Bee delegation also acknowledged Mutsahuni, also known as “Shami,” for her historic accomplishment and for proudly raising the national flag.

“As a country, we honour your tenacity, intelligence, and resolve. You have not only encouraged a generation of young Zimbabweans to believe in the power of words, but you have also made us proud,” the secretary continued.

Ivainashe Mbanda and Chelsea Chingaira from Kyle College, Lauren Phillips from Uppervale College, Anisha Zvina from Goldridge, and Mufaro Munyaradzi from Celebration International School are additional exceptional kids who represented Zimbabwe in Abuja. After a fiercely contested round, Mbanda finished fourth in the junior division, just missing a podium finish.

Mutsahuni’s accomplishments demonstrate Zimbabwe’s capacity to produce outstanding young talent that can succeed on global stages.
