The deputy bursar of Kwara State University Malete, Alhaji Ayuba Abdullahi, passed suddenly on Wednesday night while he was watching South Africa and Nigeria play in the current AFCON semi-final.
On penalties, Nigeria overcame South Africa 4-3 after regular and extra time tied 1-1.
Close relatives of the deceased, who spoke on condition of anonymity, claimed that before feeling anxious, Abdullahi had gone to a sports centre in the Sango area.
“The Deputy Bursar watched the South Africa vs. Nigeria game from the start of extra time until it was penalty kick time”, one of the sources claimed.
He claimed he felt dizzy and had to go back home to unwind, not realizing that his blood pressure had gone up.
He was brought to a private hospital in Sango after passing out at home, and then to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. But before he could receive medical attention, he passed away.
“He was buried by Islamic rites on Thursday morning.”
The University’s head of information, Dr. Saedat Aliyu, confirmed Abdullahi’s demise.
The cause of death has not yet been established, according to Aliyu, but the administration of the university has.
