Dr. Daniel Nawose’s Inspiring Journey from Herding Livestock to Two PhDs

Dr. Daniel Ing’ollan Nawose, a former herder from Turkana County, has made history by earning his second PhD, becoming the first scholar from his community to achieve this feat.

Dr. Nawose’s story is a testament to perseverance and the power of education, despite a difficult upbringing marked by poverty, child labor, and societal challenges.

Born in the banditry-prone area of Katilia, Dr. Nawose began herding camels and goats at a young age to support his family after the death of his father. In 1980, a chance encounter led him to Katilia Primary School, where he juggled herding with his studies. He later progressed to Lokitaung Secondary School, overcoming numerous obstacles.

Dr. Nawose served in the military for over a decade, resigning in 2004 to pursue his passion for education. He completed his undergraduate degree at Moi University in 2007, followed by a master’s degree in 2011. In 2018, he earned his first PhD in France. Driven by his deep passion for academia, he began his second PhD in Religious Studies Education in 2020.

Dr. Nawose’s determination to inspire his community and prove the transformative power of education has made him a role model, despite enduring financial struggles and societal challenges.

Supported by his wife, Rebecca, and celebrated by his family and peers, Dr. Nawose hopes his journey will motivate others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles.
