The Federal Government has responded to the recent bullying incident at Federal Government College (FGC), Enugu, reaffirming its dedication to ensuring a safe learning environment in all federal schools across Nigeria.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, addressed the issue after a disturbing video surfaced on social media showing a group of students assaulting an SS1 day student on November 7, 2024. Following the incident, the Federal Ministry of Education launched an investigation, forming a disciplinary committee to examine the case thoroughly.
According to the Ministry’s findings:
- 13 students involved in the assault have been suspended for six weeks while investigations continue.
- The Ministry has instructed the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) to collaborate with security agencies for a deeper investigation, especially concerning any possible links to external groups.
- The college immediately implemented enhanced security measures, including increased engagement with law enforcement and a review of existing safety protocols.
Additionally, counseling and rehabilitation support will be provided to affected students to address psychological impacts and ensure their reintegration into a positive school environment.
Dr. Alausa emphasized the need for cooperation among parents, school authorities, and security agencies to address these challenges and foster a safe and conducive atmosphere for all students. The Ministry remains committed to enforcing discipline while ensuring the protection and well-being of students nationwide.
