FG Releases the Total UTME Candidates Allowed Into Tertiary Institutions for 2024 JAMB

The Federal Government, through Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman, revealed that just about 20 percent of applicants to the current Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for 2024 will be admitted into universities across the country. On Monday, April 22, Mamman made this declaration in Abuja while he and Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), were supervising the UTME process.

According to a Premium Times story, just roughly 20% of the more than 1.9 million UTME applicants who enrolled are anticipated to be admitted into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

“It’s not about employment, but about how many will be admitted from this set,” he stated. I believe the average percentage for universities, polytechnics, and education colleges is roughly 20%.

Given the restricted number of spots available in postsecondary institutions, Mamman stressed the significance of skill acquisition in preparing youngsters for a brighter future, as reported by the Nigerian Tribune.

Mamman addressed worries about what would happen to the other 80% of applicants who might not be accepted, emphasizing the value of skill development in ensuring that students had fulfilling lives after high school.

You inquire as to the whereabouts of the 80 percent. They live with us as our wards, our children. Because of this, the topic of skill acquisition is crucial since any student who is unable to continue their education beyond secondary school—or even primary school—should be able to lead a fulfilling life.

“Skills are the only way to address it; students must acquire skills from the moment they start school and continue through their whole educational journey. Someone ought to complete with a particular ability. That is a component of the 6-3-3-4’s premise.
