As the only first-class graduate in her class and the top graduating student in Zoology, Halima Ahmed, a recent graduate of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has accomplished an incredible academic milestone (2022). Ahmed shared her experience in a passionate LinkedIn article, emphasising the perseverance, planning, and attitude needed to succeed academically.
At first, zoology was not her favourite subject to study, but instead of viewing this as a failure, she decided to take on the task head-on.

It was quite the ride! Ahmed talked about the demanding academic path that comprised in-depth theoretical coursework, practical workshops, and life-changing field trips. Her choice to devote herself entirely to the discipline produced remarkable outcomes.
In light of her experience, Ahmed underlined that cultivating a passion for one’s work is the key to achieving true excellence. She said that while enthusiasm is not always immediate, it may be developed with hard work, curiosity, and a positive outlook.
She also discussed important ideas that helped her succeed:
• Fully Commit: Giving zoology your all attention and treating it as more than a contingency plan.
- Accept the Process: Realising the value of grasping both the theoretical and practical facets.
- Consistency Over Intensity: Putting more emphasis on deliberate, consistent effort than on last-minute scrambling.
- Discover Your Special Advantage: Adding something extra, whether by leadership, innovation, or research.
Ahmed’s motivational story highlights how crucial flexibility and tenacity are to reaching both academic and professional objectives. She exhorts others to develop a “first-class mindset” in their own professional lives and to use setbacks as opportunities for growth.
Her accomplishment is proof of the strength of perseverance, foresight, and a steadfast dedication to quality.
