Isioma Nwosu was Named LASU’s best Graduating Student.

With an exceptional CGPA of 4.93, Isioma Sybil Nwosu of the Department of Biochemistry has been named Lagos State University’s (LASU) overall best-graduating student for the 2023–2024 academic year.

Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the vice chancellor of LASU, made the statement Thursday at a press conference held in advance of the university’s 28th Convocation event. She took satisfaction in LASU’s dedication to turning forth graduates who are equipped to contribute significantly on a national and international scale.

The Convocation schedule, which is separated into pre-convocation and main convocation activities, was presented by Professor Olatunji-Bello.

  • On Friday, April 4, 2025, the pre-convocation activities started with a staff sports competition and a press briefing. This was followed by a Jumat service at the University Central Mosque. On Sunday, April 6, the University Chapel of Light in Ojo will host a Thanksgiving ceremony.
  • On Monday, April 7, the university’s Badagry Gate will host a Coconut Breaking and Cultural Festival to kick off the main convocation activities.
  • The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, will give the convocation lecture on Tuesday, April 8, titled “Patriots, Citizenship, and National Ownership: The Imperative of Collective Responsibility for Nigeria’s Future.” Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), will serve as the chairman.
  • On Wednesday, April 9, at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, diplomas, first degrees, postgraduate diplomas, and master’s degrees will be awarded.
  • Honorary doctorates, distinguished professorships, and doctorate degrees will be awarded during the grand finale on Thursday, April 10.

971 pupils in all, comprising 123 with distinctions, 550 with upper credits, 287 with lower credits, and 11 passes, will be awarded diploma certificates. 3,076 of the 8,711 undergraduate students graduated with second-class upper division, 4,397 with second-class lower division, 990 with third class, 39 with passes, and 192 with first-class honours.

2,235 students will receive certificates for postgraduate degrees, including 125 PhDs, 37 professional doctorates, 639 professional master’s degrees, 1,132 academic master’s degrees, and 302 postgraduate diplomas.

In recognition of their services to the advancement of the country, the university will award honorary doctorates to Otunba Olufemi Olusegun Pedro, the former deputy governor of Lagos State, and Brigadier General Buba Marwa (Rtd.), the chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). Professor Joseph Abayomi Olagunju will also get recognition as a Distinguished Professor.

The accomplishments of LASU during her leadership, such as the complete accreditation of 43 of the 44 courses submitted to the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2023, were also noted by Professor Olatunji-Bello. She highlighted LASU’s reputation as the best state institution in Nigeria and its three-year run as the top university in Sub-Saharan Africa according to the UI Greenmetrics World institution Ranking.

Isioma Nwosu’s outstanding academic achievement further solidifies LASU’s standing as a hub for top-notch research and education by demonstrating the university’s dedication to academic excellence.
