Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates and their parents are subject to a new policy that has been announced by Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). If parents interfere with the examination process, candidates would henceforth be held accountable, according to Prof. Oloyede.
Prof. Oloyede clarified that JAMB is firmly against any disturbances brought about by parents during the exam in an interview with The Punch.
He declared, “We are deciding that if the candidate’s parent, mother, or father is found to have interfered with our examination, we will hold that candidate accountable.”
He related an instance in which a 30-minute cable problem prompted parents to try to stop the test, which resulted in delays and session cancellations.
Prof. Oloyede expressed shock at the actions of these parents and underlined that delisting would occur for any center that permits parents to tamper with the examination process. Additionally, centers have been directed by JAMB to identify the parents who are involved; if necessary, consequences would be applied, including punishing the candidate.
In his words:
“That was how parents insisted that the second and third sessions would not commence because their children couldn’t sit the first session. The center had to bring in security agents to arrest the situation. “What type of parents are these? We are now saying that any center that allows a parent to get near where the candidates are being screened or being treated, that center will be delisted. Secondly, we have instructed the centers to just identify the parent and the candidate, we would take a proper sanction, against the candidate.”
Prof. Oloyede stressed that candidates should not suffer due to the misconduct of their parents. He stated, “Whoever has a bad parent deserves to suffer the consequences of the bad behavior of the parent. They cannot be destroying the careers of other students because of their own emotions and indiscipline.”
The purpose of this new policy is to protect the integrity of the application process for all candidates and guarantee the efficient administration of UTME exams.
