JAMB Discusses “Criteria”: “300 Score in UTME Can’t Guarantee You Admission If..

In discussing the standards for admission to Federal universities, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) emphasized that attaining the minimum score of 300 on the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) would not be sufficient if other prerequisites were not met.

This explanation was made in response to a candidate’s recommendation that admittance be determined by merit rather than catchment areas.

The candidate, identified as Inilayo Stephen Opuofoni, expressed appreciation for the work of JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede while advocating for the elimination of the Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS) quota system in admissions.

“Prof. Oloyede is doing his best,” tweeted Opuofoni. Bravo to him. Furthermore, he ought to endeavor to guarantee that admissions are granted based on merit rather than ELDS. Why wouldn’t a student who has a score higher than 300 be accepted into a federal university? His/her catchment area is not there.

In response, JAMB stated that while achieving a 300 in the UTME is impressive, admission choices are determined by some factors, including ELDS status.

While a UTME score of 300 is advantageous, admission is subject to fulfilling all prerequisites, as JAMB reiterated. According to JAMB’s statement, ELDS is one of the requirements for admission. It cannot be discarded. Although a 300 overall UTME score is good, it does not ensure admission if the applicant does not fulfill further requirements.
