A bright and driven young man from Howard County, Maryland named James Stewart has fulfilled his long-time ambition of becoming a doctor by earning a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Meharry Medical College.
James started his medical career as a young child. He had dreamed of wearing a white coat since he was three years old—not as a daydream, but as a calling. In order to prepare for his admission to medical school, he started his academic career at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he graduated with a degree in Biological Sciences.

When he observed a triple bypass surgery in person during his senior year of high school, the desire became even more real. That encounter confirmed that surgery was his calling and stoked a lifelong passion in him.
After graduating from medical school, James had a transformative experience on National Match Day, when American medical graduates learn where they would finish their residency training. He was thrilled and moved to tears when he found out that he had been accepted into Yale University’s General Surgery residency, his top choice.
“One of the most joyful times in my life.” I’m happy to report that I matched at my first pick and will be training as a surgeon at Yale University,” he said.
James admits that there were difficulties along the way to success. He was advised at times to give up and set his sights lower, but he persisted in believing in his dream. He now seeks to give back after being inspired by mentors such as Yale’s Chair of Surgery, Dr. Nita Ahuja.
“This is just the beginning for me. It’s your responsibility to turn around and assist the next climber after you reach the summit,” he stated.
