LASU’s Best Graduating Student Isioma Excels After Setback.

At Lagos State University’s 28th convocation, Miss Isioma Nwosu, the university’s best graduating student for 2023/2024, gave a valedictory address about her tenacity and change.

After failing to get into her preferred course, Medicine and Surgery, Nwosu, who has a 4.93 cumulative GPA from the Department of Biochemistry, frankly detailed her academic experience.

In 2019, Nwosu graduated as the top student from her secondary school. She was discouraged when she had to retake the UTME.

“Being valedictorian and having to rewrite UTME was disheartening,” she said. She missed the Medicine cutoff at the University of Ibadan by two points, which her friends instantly noticed, increasing her sense of failure.

Her LASU Medicine and Surgery application was rejected, but she was accepted into the Biochemistry program, which she had never heard of.

Nwosu responded with significant disappointment to the news. Despite initial resistance, she gradually accepted her new course. She excelled with help from professors and friends.

She encouraged graduates to believe in themselves and work hard, despite academic hurdles, in her address.

“This chapter showed your resilience and potential. The future awaits your brightness, she murmured. “Boldly pursue your dreams and surround yourself with people who share your values and goals.”

LASU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello empowered the graduating students earlier in the event. She advised them to shape their stories and destiny with determination.

“Write your own story the way you want it to be told,” the Vice-Chancellor suggested. Avoid abandoning your future to life’s volatility by forging ahead with purpose.

She congratulated the 11,917 graduates, citing their character and academic brilliance as the foundation for their degrees.

“Let your knowledge be a tool for driving positive change in the world,” she said. After a setback, Isioma Nwosu becomes Lasu’s best graduate.
