As the top graduating student in the Department of Mathematics Education at Ekiti State University, Aanaoluwa Oluwayemi received a First Class Honours degree in a heartfelt celebration of tenacity and academic achievement. However, her path was anything but typical.
Early setbacks marred Oluwayemi’s path to academic success. She acknowledged that she didn’t always stand out in the classroom during her early years. I wasn’t the best student all the time. Sometimes I knew I could perform better, she thought. Oluwayemi persisted despite a difficult beginning and an initial inability to fulfil the prerequisites for her desired course. She was eventually admitted to the university as a result of her persistence.

Her perseverance paid off at EKSU in the form of academic success. Oluwayemi received straight A’s and B’s and consistently posted excellent results. She embodied the university’s values of service and scholarship by holding leadership positions outside of the classroom, such as deputy governor of her department and leading a student fellowship.
However, there were other celebrities in the family besides Aanaoluwa. The Oluwayemi twins are a representation of sibling support and collective success because her twin sibling also graduated at the top of their class in a closely related program. “God is really faithful,” she said, attributing her family’s and her faith’s steadfast support.
Oluwayemi is enthusiastic about the future and ready to contribute significantly to mathematics education both in Nigeria and abroad. Her voice was full of purpose and hope as she said, “I’m open to new opportunities.”
Aanaoluwa Oluwayemi’s journey from academic setbacks to graduating with top honours serves as a potent reminder that hard work, faith, and resilience can transform even the most difficult beginnings into success stories.
