Latonya Johnson, 43, and her daughter, Laila Birchett, 21, graduated from Rutgers University’s School of Social Work on the same day, marking a stunning celebration of tenacity and family togetherness.
Latonya, a divorced mother of six, had put off her scholastic aspirations for a long time because of the obligations of her job and motherhood. Her college career, which started in 1999, was cut short on many occasions. However, Laila urged her to join with her at Rutgers in 2022.
“I never thought I would graduate with my daughter,” Latonya said. “It still seems unbelievable.”

Laila quit her part-time job as a drug and alcohol counsellor to devote herself entirely to her studies. She was committed to completing her degree in spite of the uncertainties and financial hardship.
The two had a single professor in common and helped one another with everything from overcoming technological obstacles to maintaining motivation when things got hard. “I would look at my mom and think, ‘If she can do it, I can too,’ whenever I felt like giving up,” Laila said.
Rutgers University’s assistance, particularly for nontraditional students, was commended by Latonya. “It takes a village to uplift a returning student, just as it takes a village to raise a child,” she remarked.
Both mother and daughter have now applied to the university’s Master of Social Work degree, demonstrating that education is really ageless.
