New Education Minister lifts 18-year tertiary entry limit

Dr. Tunji Alausa, the new Minister of Education, has announced that the minimum age requirement for admission into tertiary institutions will remain at 16 years. This decision, shared at his inaugural briefing in Abuja alongside Minister of State for Education Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad and Permanent Secretary Dr. Nasiru Sani-Gwarzo, overturns the previous policy set by former Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, who had planned to implement an 18-year benchmark starting in the 2025/2026 academic session.

“We will not be going forward with the 18-year admission benchmark. We will go with 16 years and are planning to meet with JAMB and other stakeholders to solidify this stance,” Dr. Alausa stated. He also noted that exceptions will be made for gifted students, emphasizing that the 18-year requirement will no longer be part of the policy.
