Omoyele Sowore, a human rights advocate and former presidential candidate, has openly supported Ushie Rita Uguamaye, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who has come under fire for calling out President Bola Tinubu’s government in a widely shared video.
On Monday, March 17, 2025, Sowore shared a video on X (previously Twitter) stating that he met with Uguamaye in Lagos and he and a group of attorneys escorted her to the NYSC Local Government Inspector’s (LGI) office.
After sharing a TikTok video in which she bemoaned Nigeria’s deteriorating economic circumstances and chastised Tinubu’s leadership, Uguamaye provoked intense discussion. She claimed to have gotten threats after the video went viral, which is why the NYSC called her to come to the LGI office in Eti-Osa 3 at 10 a.m. on March 17.
When Sowore and his legal team arrived at the NYSC headquarters, they discovered that the LGI officers were not there. Later on, he provided an update on X, saying:
“The LGI official had disappeared and hadn’t been present during our visit.”
Concerns about political dissent and free expression in Nigeria have increased as a result of Sowore’s engagement. Many people are now wondering if the NYSC or other authorities would discipline Uguamaye. Since the NYSC has not yet released an official statement, many people are wondering what might happen to the corps member.
