TASUED to Federal University Conversion by Tinubu.

The president granted the consent on Friday, according to a statement released on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Advisor to the President (Information & Strategy).

TASUED is Nigeria’s first specialised university of education, having been founded by the Ogun State Government in 2005.

It was given its name in honour of Dr. Tai Solarin, a well-known campaigner who established the Mayflower School in Ikenne.

“It is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honour Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who began the revolutionary free education programme in Western Nigeria and Dr Tai Solarin, who spent most of his life educating our children and impacting patriotic and leadership lessons in them at Mayflower School in Ikenne”, The President said.

“It is also in honour of the Awujale of Ijebuland, who played a critical role in preventing the university’s closure in 2012, just seven years after its establishment,” he added.

Being a federal institution, TASUED would be the first university in the Ogun East senatorial district to be owned by the federal government. With a strong academic program and infrastructure, the changeover calls for little federal funding.

According to the release, Tinubu expressed gratitude to the Ogun State Government for requesting the Federal Government to assume control of the institution, which is among the top educational resources in the state.

Prominent individuals from Ogun State’s Eastern Senatorial District, which includes Ijebu and Remo, were Awolowo and Solarin.

President Tinubu underlined that the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening teacher education and raising the standard of instruction at all educational levels is demonstrated by TASUED’s transformation into a Federal University of Education.
