Teacher Trainee Arrested After Classroom Accident in Ogun State

A tragic classroom incident at Owiwi Nursery and Primary School, Obada Oko, Ogun State, has led to the arrest of Adéọlá Adeyemo, a 400-level student of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode. The accident, which occurred during Adeyemo’s teaching practice, resulted in the loss of an 11-year-old pupil’s right eye.

According to the Ogun State Police Command, the incident happened around 3 p.m. when Adeyemo was holding a cane in preparation for the school’s end-of-year party. The pupil, identified as Alao Idera, reportedly ran toward Adeyemo, causing the cane to accidentally pierce her eye.

Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed that the injured pupil reached the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, where surgeons removed the damaged eye.

“The teacher did not flog the student, nor was there any wrongdoing on the part of the pupil. It was an unfortunate accident,” Odutola explained.

The spokesperson also disclosed that Adeyemo, upon learning about the pupil’s eye removal, allegedly attempted suicide by ingesting harmful substances. Police intervened promptly, taking her to the hospital, where she was treated and stabilized.

This incident has sparked concerns about safety measures in schools. It follows another tragic case in Ogun State involving a teacher from Obada Grammar School. The teacher, Azamdjo Elijah, allegedly caused the death of a Senior Secondary School 2 student, Monday Arijo, by instructing him to perform 162 frog jumps and administering 24 strokes of the cane as punishment.

The Ogun State Police Command has urged educators and school administrators to adopt safer disciplinary practices and prioritize student welfare to prevent such occurrences.
