The University of Cross River State’s management is extremely concerned about claims of a security breach that occurred on Wednesday, April 3, 2025, the first day of the first semester exams for the 2024–2025 academic session, on the university’s Calabar campus.
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning’s Charles Mbinghi Ogar (registration number: 19/URP/069) and the Department of Physics’ Emmanuel Ogochukwu Obi (registration number: 19/PHY/057), as well as a number of their associates, violently attacked Mr. Eyong Inah Eyong, a staff member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, according to investigations and reliable eyewitness accounts.

Mr. Charles allegedly fired at Mr. Eyong during that altercation, and the bullet (pellet) from the shot ricocheted and hit a postgraduate student who was walking by, causing him to be hospitalised right away.
In addition to putting lives in danger, their activities caused chaos, panic, and disturbance throughout the campus. As they and their collaborators fled the scene, students and staff fled for their safety, forcing an emergency suspension of academic activity, including the day’s exams.
This behaviour is a flagrant breach of the University’s policies and procedures as stated in the Code of Conduct and the Students’ Handbook, including but not restricted to:
- Using and possessing lethal weapons on campus
- Physical assault and threats to life
- Interrupting planned educational activities
- Behaviour that could lead to a violation of the peace
The University Management has made the following decision in light of the seriousness of these violations and in accordance with the terms of the university’s disciplinary procedures.
- With immediate effect, they are hereby placed on indefinite leave from the university.
- They are strictly prohibited from entering any university campus and from engaging in any social or academic activities there.
- The Nigeria Police Force has been officially tasked with looking into their matter further and, if needed, bringing charges.
The University will pursue additional internal disciplinary measures after it receives the results of the police inquiry.
Please be aware that breaking this rule could have serious repercussions, including as expulsion and criminal charges.
During this time, they are urged to avoid all university property.
They ought to be led appropriately.
