UNILORIN New Students Resumption

Prof. Olubunmi Abayomi Omotesho, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), University of Ilorin, announced that new students will return in October for the 2024/2025 academic year. The new students will be a mix of those admitted for the 2023/2024 session and those who participated in the 2024/2025 Post-UTME exercise.

In an interview with UNILORIN Bulletin last Thursday (August 29, 2024), Prof. Omotesho said the Committee of Provosts and Deans will review the proposed October resumption date following standard procedure before submitting it to the Senate for approval. He added the formal restart date would be revealed after Senate approval.

Prof. Omotesho explained that the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and the ASUU strike, which lasted a year, caused the University to run one session behind schedule, forcing it to merge two applicant pools.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor indicated that the Administration advocated combining two academic sessions to reduce the backlog, while the 13th Council advised operating both simultaneously. However, practical issues rendered holding two sessions concurrently impossible.

After thorough deliberations, Prof. Omotesho announced the University administration has decided to formally cancel the 2023/24 session because “given the logistics involved, the easiest option is to merge the two sessions.” This decision will involve two sets of JAMB applicants, which we must handle immediately; otherwise, we will continue to have one set lagging behind. He explained that this decision aims to streamline the University’s academic schedule, allowing the new session to begin in October and return to the usual October-July pattern.
