UTME 2024: 6 Reasons Why Applicants With Scores of 300 and Higher Might Not Be Admitted

Abuja’s Garki Admission may not be granted to Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) candidates who achieved a score of 300 or higher on the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Candidates wishing to be admitted into Nigerian higher education institutions take the UTME, which is administered by JAMB.

1.9 million individuals registered for the exam this year (2024), according to JAMB.

Since JAMB has not yet formally released the results, candidates who have taken the exam are expecting to hear back on their scores.

In the meantime, at least 6.9 million candidates took the UTME between 2019 and 2022, according to a JAMB data analysis. But just 2.03 million applicants were accepted into various postsecondary schools, leaving 4.87 million applicants unable to get entrance.

Of the almost four million young Nigerians who applied, 4,385 applicants received a score of 300 or above out of a possible 400.

JAMB determined that a number of factors were to blame for this.

A Few Of The Reasons Are Stressed Below:

  • Incorrect O-Level subject pairing

An incomplete or incorrect UTME subject selection can be detrimental to an applicant, and the incorrect combination of O’level results might also disqualify a candidate.

A UTME candidate is automatically ineligible for the course if they have the incorrect subject combination on their West African Examinations Council (WAEC) or National Examination Council (NECO) record.

As a result, you might need to ask your lecturers who have expertise in the subject for guidance if you are in the scientific department. The same holds true for students of art and commerce, as they are called in Nigeria.

    • Low score on the post-UTME screening

A UTME applicant who performed poorly on their post-UTME test would not be eligible to be admitted to a university.

That might alter, though, if he or she transfers institutions.

    • Refusing to accept the offer of admittance

Rejecting an admission offer indicates that an applicant did not take advantage of the chance to accept or reject.

JAMB typically asks for two responses after admitting a candidate: accept or reject.

    • Using the same application twice

If an applicant recreates their application, they risk being rejected even if they receive a score of 300 or above.

It is not permitted for UTME candidates to submit multiple applications.

    • Missing the post-UTME examination

For applicants wishing to be admitted into different universities, polytechnics, institutes of education, and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria, the Post-UTME examination serves as a screening tool following the JAMb.

When applying to the majority of Nigeria’s higher education institutions, the test is one of the most significant exams. Thus, UTME candidates’ hopes of getting into college are dashed if they fail this exam.

    • Inconsistency in catchment

There is the problem of catchment areas in federal university admissions.

The idea behind the premise was to encourage a feeling of community.

If the school chosen by UTME applicants is a good fit for their catchment region, they will be admitted.
