Honourable Justice Amina Adamu Augie, CON, JSC (Rtd) has been appointed as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at Wigwe University, while Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi has been named the institution’s substantive Vice-Chancellor.
In a statement signed by the Board of Trustees Chairman, Prof. Fabian Ajogwu, OFR, SAN, the news was made on February 19, 2025. Professor Ajogwu underlined that the university’s dedication to leadership, innovation, and academic achievement is reflected in these appointments.

Prof. Julius Okojie, OON is replaced as Pro-Chancellor by Hon. Justice Amina Augie. She brings decades of legal and academic experience to her new position as a highly regarded jurist and former Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
She graduated from the University of Ife with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in 1977, was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1978, and then went on to the University of Lagos to receive a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Criminology in 1987.Before being appointed Chief Magistrate in 1988, she lectured at Ahmadu Bello University and the Nigerian Law School, spanning her career in academia, law practice, and judicial service.
She progressed through the ranks of the judiciary, first as a judge of the High Court (1992), then as a justice of the Court of Appeal (2002–2016), and finally as a justice of the Supreme Court (2016–2023), becoming the sixth woman to occupy that role in Nigerian history.
Well-known for her honesty, legal knowledge, and dedication to justice, she is anticipated to provide the university’s governing body with strong leadership. Previously Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation), Dean of Science and Computing, and Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Marwan Al-Akaidi has been confirmed as Vice-Chancellor.
Prof. Al-Akaidi is a renowned expert in digital communications and optical engineering who graduated from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom with a bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree. Over the course of his three-decade academic career, he has published more than 300 research papers in prestigious international journals and conferences, mentored more than 45 PhD and 100 MSc students, and more.
He has served in important leadership roles in universities in the UK and the MENA area, including provost, vice president, dean of computing, and head of engineering and technology. In the Middle East, he has also been a pioneer in MOOCs, e-learning, and blended learning, greatly increasing access to high-quality education.
The Board of Trustees said it is certain that both leaders will lead Wigwe University to new heights in research, innovation, and academic achievement. It is anticipated that Prof. Al-Akaidi’s experience and Hon. Justice Augie’s leadership will propel the university’s goal of becoming a global hub for entrepreneurship, knowledge, and discovery.
