Past Events
In 1964, Lancaster University was established by Royal Charter in the United Kingdom in response to the post-World War II need for higher education. It was one of the “glass-plate universities” that were suggested in the years 1958 – 1961. Up until 2004, Princess Alexandra of Kent was the first chancellor. In 1964, the university welcomed its first class of students, and in 1965, it began to accept scientific majors as well. Its collegiate system began with the founding of Bowland and Lonsdale Colleges in 1964, and the first college building was constructed in 1966.
