OAU: Lion Fatally Attacks Zookeeper During Feeding

A zookeeper at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Zoological Garden met his demise in a tragic encounter with a lion, shocking the people of Ile-Ife. Despite years of intimate human engagement, the incident, which happened on Monday during a regular feeding session, highlights how unpredictable wild animals can be.

An Upsetting Development

Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, the zookeeper—a well-respected Veterinary Technologist—was going about his daily business of feeding the feral cats in their pen. After spending more than ten years of his professional life caring for these magnificent animals, Mr. Olawuyi tragically lost his life to one of the lions he had raised since the animal’s birth on the university campus almost nine years ago.

OAU’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, formally confirmed the event and emphasized Mr. Olawuyi’s close relationship with the animals. Although other employees at the site responded quickly, their heroic attempts to save their colleague were unsuccessful since the lion fatally injured them.

Quick Reaction and the University’s Initiative

The administration of the university, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Adebayo Bamire, called a meeting to order after learning of this unfortunate incident and carried out an immediate assessment. According to Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, the acting director of the University Health and Medical Center, Mr. Olawuyi’s life was not saved despite intensive medical efforts. The university decided to put the hostile lion involved in the event to death as a result of this devastating loss.

The institution has offered assistance to Mr. Olawuyi’s family during this trying time and has sent its sincere condolences. To ensure that a tragedy of this nature doesn’t happen again, a thorough investigation has also been launched to identify the immediate and underlying circumstances that contributed to this unfortunate catastrophe.

Considering Former Events

This incident reminds me of past regrettable cases where lions have attacked people. At a private game lodge close to Pretoria, South Africa, in February 2018, a young woman was fatally mauled by a lioness. Similar to this, a conservationist who had reared two white lionesses was slain in an unprovoked attack in August 2022. Even in controlled circumstances, there are always risks associated with dealing with wild animals, as these examples serve as sobering reminders of.

Finally

The unpredictability of wild animals and the inherent risks faced by people who care for them are poignantly brought to light by the passing of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi. Significant concerns are brought up regarding safety procedures and the morality of retaining wild animals in captivity. The Obafemi Awolowo University community is grieving over this loss, but it’s important to remember how committed zookeepers like Mr. Olawuyi are to the preservation and care of these amazing animals. In keeping with Mr. Olawuyi’s legacy and dedication to animal welfare, the next probe should yield answers and avert catastrophes in the future.
