The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is hosting an essay competition in honor of the 2024 World Maritime Day. The competition’s topic is “Navigating the future: safety first!”
The theme for World Maritime Day in 2024, “Navigating the future: safety first!”, highlights the International Maritime Organization’s efforts to improve maritime safety and security. This includes protecting the marine environment and ensuring that the regulatory development process keeps up with rapid technological advancements and innovation in a safe manner.
The subject of the essay competition
The subject matter pertains to “Navigating the future: prioritizing safety!” in alignment with the overarching theme of the 2024 World Maritime Day.
Instructions
This Special Category is open to students enrolled in Maritime Tertiary Institutions or institutions with Maritime Departments.
Participants must provide genuine documentation of their enrollment as students along with their writings. Proof should consist of both admission letters and institution identification cards.

The essays should have a maximum word limit of 1200 words, with a tolerance of plus or minus 10%. Set the line spacing to double in MS Word and the font size to 12. Plagiarism and the use of Artificial Intelligence will not be tolerated.
Essays should conclude with the inclusion of the participant’s name, telephone number, and email address.
Essays that fail to adhere to the standards will be rejected.
Only those who have achieved achievement will get communication.
Recognition and honors
- The winner will receive a N500,000 education grant, a laptop, a plaque, and have their winning essay published in NIMASA’s magazine. The topic of discussion is “The VOYAGE” and the website of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
- The 2nd place winner will get a N350,000 Education Grant, along with a laptop and a plaque.
- The 3rd place winner will get a N250,000 Education Grant, along with a laptop and a plaque.
- There are seven consolation awards of N100,000 each.
Each individual will receive an education grant and a certificate of recognition. The deadline for submissions is Friday, September 13, 2024. We will not consider late essay submissions. The organizers will announce the date for the prize and award ceremony later.
Winners will be notified promptly once the scoring process is complete. The date for the Prize & Award presentation will be announced later.
