The National Examination Council (NECO) released the results of the June/July 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), revealing that 60.55% of applicants (828,284 students) obtained five credits, including English and Mathematics.

Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, the Registrar of NECO, said that 83.90% (1,147,597 applicants) got five or more credits, irrespective of their performance in English and Mathematics, while 2,267 candidates with special needs took part in the examinations.

Abia, Imo, and Ebonyi states distinguished themselves as the highest-performing areas, whilst Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Borno, and Zamfara had the worst outcomes.

In the current year, 1,376,423 applicants enrolled for the examination, with 1,367,736 participating. NECO reported a 30.1% reduction in examination malpractice instances, down from 12,030 to 8,437 in 2023.

Mass cheating occurred in forty schools across seventeen states, and the Council intends to consult with the impacted institutions prior to enacting punishments.

Furthermore, a school in Ekiti State faces potential de-recognition due to widespread cheating. Additionally, 21 supervisors from 12 states are at risk of blacklisting for offenses such as inadequate supervision, extortion, and neglect.
