30 Bauchi PhDs Resigned Over Low Pay—ASUU

On Friday, ASUU Bauchi Zone Coordinator Namo Timothy announced this during a news conference at the university’s Yuli Campus.

Timothy stated that state-owned Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) is near death owing to inadequate management and student well-being.

The ASUU Coordinator said, “If this issue is not resolved, the ASUU branch zone will no longer ensure industrial harmony between ASUU SAZU members and the university administration.” He urged the Bauchi government to declare a state of emergency on the university to reverse years of poor management.

“The zone has engaged key stakeholders and exchanged several correspondences to resolve these issues to no avail.”

He complained that ASUU members at SAZU do not have a pension or death benefit system like public sector workers nationwide.

He said the SAZU management owes its members approximately 650 million naira in Earned Academic Allowance and Excess Work Load Allowance from 2012 till date.

Timothy also criticised the decision to name an HND graduate as university bursar, pointing out that the institution’s policy only allows first-degree applicants for the position.

He continued, “This decision has not only lowered the morale of our members in the university but also forced many, including 30 trained PhD holders, to resign and move to other institutions where they feel their future is more secure.”

The Coordinator urged the Bauchi government and university to implement a thorough leaving strategy including pension and death benefits for personnel.
