The Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, announced over the weekend that the state Executive Council has approved the upgrade of Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) to a specialized medical university named University of Medicine & Health Sciences (U.M.H).
During a stakeholder meeting organized by the Ministry of Tertiary Education and the Ministry of Health, the management teams of LASUCOM and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) were present for the announcement.
Mr. Sule revealed that the Lagos State House of Assembly has approved the draft law to establish the university for submission
The new university will operate with a network of clinical training facilities across the state’s IBILE administrative divisions, with LASUTH serving as the primary oversight clinical training facility.
The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to this project, stating, “This administration will not back down on this upgrade.” He noted that officials have allocated a significant area of land at Ketu-Ejirin in Epe for the university’s main campus, which will include administrative buildings and basic medical science programs
Clinical training will take place at LASUTH and other designated facilities across the IBILE divisions.
Prof. Abayomi explained that this innovative plan allows the new university to leverage clinical personnel and infrastructure from other well-equipped general hospitals and some private hospitals and laboratories in Lagos to train numerous medical doctors and health professionals.
