KWASU to Pay Minimum Wage

The Chairman of the Governing Council of Kwara State University, Malete, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, OON, has approved a new minimum wage of seventy thousand Naira for university staff, effective from December 2024.

This decision is aimed at fostering industrial harmony and enhancing staff commitment to the institution’s vision.

Professor Ambali made the announcement during a meeting with the executives of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ibadan Zone, on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at the Council Chamber of the institution’s Business School in Ilorin. He emphasized that the university aligns with ASUU’s philosophy of prioritizing a conducive workplace and staff welfare. He further assured that the Governing Council would continue to motivate staff to give their best to the university.

In addition to the minimum wage increase, Professor Ambali outlined other welfare initiatives, including:

  • A consequential adjustment to staff salaries.
  • A one hundred thousand Naira (N100,000) school fees rebate for the biological children of staff studying at the university.
  • A fifty thousand Naira (N50,000) monthly stipend for staff with disabilities.
  • A subsidized transportation scheme to ease movement between Ilorin and Malete.

He also mentioned ongoing discussions with the State Government regarding the payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) to ASUU members. Professor Ambali commended ASUU for its non-combative approach to addressing concerns, noting that the union’s efforts led to the establishment of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), a key source of infrastructure and training support for Nigerian institutions.

Comrade Oyegoke Oyebamiji, the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU Ibadan Zone, called for increased funding to universities to ensure effective operation and meet societal needs. He also appealed to the State Government to address the union’s requests, including the reinstatement of subvention to the university and the payment of EAA to staff. Comrade Oyebamiji praised the administration at Kwara State University for fostering good relations between staff and management, which had prevented local actions within the institution.
