The Federal Government has officially renamed the University of Abuja, which is now called Yakubu Gowon University.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing at the State House on Monday. This followed a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
The renaming honors General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former Head of State, who recently marked his 90th birthday.
The Minister noted that this decision recognizes Gowon’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development.
Idris further stated that the proposal for the name change will be submitted to the National Assembly for formal legislative approval.
