In response to an 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, University of Ibadan students peacefully demonstrated on Wednesday.
Beginning in late 2024, the outage has had a significant negative impact on medical students who depend on UCH as their teaching hospital. According to reports, UCH’s unpaid electricity bills to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) are the cause of the disturbance.
The University of Ibadan Students’ Union President, Bolaji Aweda, spearheaded the demonstration and emphasised the negative consequences of the protracted blackout. “Our students are suffering, which is why we are here to demonstrate.
Due to its inability to pay its debts to IBEDC, UCH has been without energy for 82 days. The power provider has stated unequivocally that services would not start up again until the debt is paid off.
Aweda said. The protest highlights the mounting worries about the difficulties students face and the wider ramifications of UCH’s unresolved financial problems.
